Background on Science on Stage Canada

The foundation of Science on Stage Canada comes from the Berlin Declaration:
"Science on Stage and its predecessor Physics on Stage were multi-annual activities, established in the year 2000.  These activities aimed at stimulating innovative approaches to science teaching in Europe's schools through the active participation of science educators and by:
  • Fostering exchanges of "best practices" between teachers and curriculum developers;
  • Dialogue between teachers and education policy makers, and
  • Enabling the exploitation of modern scientific knowledge in the teaching in Europe's primary and secondary schools by bringing together active scientists, notably at Europe's leading research facilities"

Mission of SoSC

The mission of SoSC is to affect 'Canadian science' at the ground floor; the inquiring and curious minds of school children.  These are the scientists of tomorrow and all the tremendous contributions to science that are yet to come!

Goals of SoSC

The goals of SoSC are simply to:
  • Provide enthusiastic science teachers with exciting new tools to ignite student curiosity
  • Share innovative and inspirational ideas with teachers nationwide
  • Recognize and reward excellence and ingenuity in science pedagogy

Special Consideration

A key issue facing Canadian educators is the inclusion of the First Nations, Métis & Inuit (FNMI) community.

2010 Host Partner - The Canadian Light Source

The 2010 host partner is the Canadian Light Source (CLS), which is located on the beautiful University of Saskatchewan campus in Saskatoon, SK.  Education is an important part of the CLS mandate.  As such it is now hosting SoSC for the second year.  Conducting the Science fair on the grounds of the CLS has inspired educators from across the country. In 2010, CLS is partnering with the College of Agriculture & Bioresources and the College of Engineering to provide opportunities for professional development to SoSC participants.

The Canadian Light Source is one of the largest scientific projects in Canada and one of hte most advanced synchrotrons in the world.  This new research tool will help find Canadians solutions for global challenges in health, materials and the environment.  Inspiring science and technology educators from around the world, CLS has proven to be the perfect host for the SoSC science and technology fair.

Future Considerations

Each year the Science Fair will be hosted by a different host sponsor in a different region of the country.  The 2010 fair will be hosted by the Canadian Light Source (CLS) located in Saskatchewan.  The location of the 2011 faire is still to be determined. If you would like more information, please contact one of the Board of Directors.

Always focusing on improving science and technology educatoin, SoSC currently focuses on students within the middle years, high school, and CGEP (approximate ages 12 - 20).  In the future, SoSC will expand to include science educators of learners of all ages including the very young and post-secondary educators working in universities and technical schools.
